A new Montessori elementary school will soon present a charter petition to the Santa Cruz City School Board. Granting this charter would sap the district’s budget by $600K-$1M, endangering already underfunded programs such as class size reductions, libraries, art, music, Life Lab–and squeezing space in school buildings. We have serious doubts about whether the charter will maintain true diversity of race, ethnicity, family income level and language, and whether it will embrace all children with special needs.
